Chaddsford, Pennsylvania (United States) Vignoles Vidal Seyval 'Spring Wine' 2009 ($14): This is a wine that screams out PARTY! Whether it’s a gathering of two (you and your sweetie, say, sitting out on the deck listening to the springtime chorus of frogs) or a family backyard cookout, or a reunion of college roommates—whatever--this is a friendly little wine for all convivial occasions. One caveat is that it’s super-loaded with very sweet fruit, yet on the other hand, it’s kept from being cloying by a powerful rush of acidity on the finish (as is true of many wines made from hybrid grapes, that finish is somewhat short). If you’ve never tasted a wine made from hybrids, this is a fun place to start. The wine’s modest 12.5% alcohol is one of its attractions, especially for a party. Just make sure it’s well chilled, and make sure, also, there is some dry wine on hand for those who are sweet averse. 87

Chaddsford 2007 Merlot - A good honest Merlot, with vanilla, spice cake and woodsy scents followed by cherry pie flavors and a medium finish of ash and green pepper. This is a subtle and restrained wine that should appeal to fans of Bordeaux. Rating 85.
Chaddsford 2007 Syrah - There's ample varietal typicity here, with black and white pepper and meat notes on top of layers of green herbs, and licorice. All this is topped off by a pleasant, Fernet Branca-spiked finish. Rating 85.
Chaddsford 2008 Rosé - While a bit funky on the nose, with prominent oak-derived vanilla notes, this wine delivers in the mouth, with a fullish body and strawberry, lemon and raspberry flavors that hang around just long enough. The exceptionally pink hue will dress up any dinner table. Rating 86.

Best buy: Pennsylvania white wine
Veteran Pennsylvania winemaker Eric Miller of Chaddsford Winery enjoys a well-earned reputation for terrific red wines. His Miller Estate Pinot Noir charts its own distinctive, terroir focused style, while his tasty, Chambourcin-based Proprietors Reserve Red delivers delicious, everyday drinking with a wide range of dishes.
Do not, however, overlook Miller's tasty white wines.
His 2008 Chaddsford Winery, Pinot Grigio, Pennsylvania (4279; $15.99), a light-hearted, yet elegant wine, offers lovely citrus and pear aromas with spicy hints. Ample, ripe citrus fruit meshes nicely with bright acidity and stony mineral notes through the dry finish. Miller frames the wine's spirit perfectly by recommending it with "cloudless skies, blue water and anything Mediterranean." Highly recommended.

Eric's wine is not an overly sweet, ice wine. Instead it is an elegant, semi-sweet wine, with lots of flavor and nice acidity, which keeps it from being a gross sticky confection. Instead, there's melon and honeydew, and a touch of... mango? Maybe some sour apple? But there was no denying, at the end of the night, it was the wine everyone was savoring.

Chaddsford 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon: Black cherry, mocha and pepper lead on this easy-drinking red from Chaddsford. On the palate, soft cherry fruit, cedar spice and chocolate give the wine a luscious edge. Pair with Mexican mole, spiced ribs or pasta. Rating: 86.

"From the heralded 2007 vintage comes the Syrah. Retailing for a very fair $19, the wine offers aromas of charcoal, smoke, and vanilla. A medium bodied wine perfect for sipping on its own or pairing with grilled meats. Flavors of black pepper, dark fruit, and a hint of tobacco help make this tasty wine the perfect Christmas present for your wine-loving friend. Also from the '07 vintage is the Pinot Noir. The light, ruby colored Pinot displays beautiful aromas of cherry, blackberry and spice. A medium body Pinot made in the classic Burgundian style. My first Atlantic Uplands Pinot Noir, and certainly not my last. Rounding out my tasting is a varietal that is finding a home in the fertile soils of Pennsylvania. Retailing for $18, the '07 Pinot Grigio delivers from start to finish. A nose of honey, lemon, and toasted almonds, help set the stage for a refreshingly crisp, zesty, wine."

"Essence," in short, is delicious and very satisfying, perfect to go with food but much better to sip and enjoy. It has dark flavors and excellent structure, but not in the least heavy, mixing together for a complexity of flavors -- peppery spices, tart blackberries, elderberry, smoky oak, tobacco -- that finish lean and with just a touch of tannin. In style, it is very much like a Super Tuscan. Read the whole article here.

2009 Third Annual News Journal Case of the Brandywine, Chaddsford Winery chosen as Best Portfolio of Wines. Included in the case:
- 2007 Pinot Grigio Best Value Wine-Beautiful herbal aromas and flavors-spicy and grassy, much like a sauvignon blanc with some gewurztraminer thrown in for a touch of spice.
- 2007 Jansen Chambourcin- here at it's best with the cherry ripeness of merlot and the lean tangy flavors of cabernet sauvignon - a lovely wine with floral notes of roses.
- 2008 Rosé - fruity and refreshing with a clean, dry finish. A blend of Bordeaux varietals plus chambourcin. Piquant cherries in a light body.
- 2007 Pinot Noir-Winemaker Eric Miller might argue the point, but this is probably the best pinot he has made-light bodied with gamy, cherry flavors in a classic Burgundian manner.

2007 Naked Chardonnay-Stainless steel fermentation and the absence of oak give this refreshing white pure lime and lemon aromas and similar flavors carrying through an uplifting, dry finish. Serve it well chilled with tapenade on a hot day.
2007 Proprietors Reserve Red-Miller's practiced, steady hand yields terrific results with this wine made from Chambourcin, a French hybrid grape. The beguiling, light ruby color offers enticing dark-cherry and spicy aromas. Delicate cherry flavors, pleasant earthy hints, and spicy-smoky notes carry through a soft, fruity finish balanced by bright acidity. Try it with pizza with a red sauce or barbecued pork ribs.

"Very Good" Chaddsford 2007 Pinot Grigio. A honeyed spice and lemon nose and flavors of crisp citrus give this Pinot Grigio a classic, food-friendly edge. The wine offers more complex fruit than a typical Pinot Grigio, with a weightier midpalate and clean finish. An elegant wine with character.

You'll want to put the bottle of Chaddsford 2008 Spring Wine in your window box planter: The bottle features a pastel water color of flowers and warm-weather food. Chaddsford, Chambourcin 2005 : Wait! Don't scroll down to the next line just because the word 'Chambourcin' scared you off. This delicious wine is truly a revelation. Made from a grape varietal little known outside the group of wine drinkers who live in marginal grape growing regions of the east and Midwest and who choose to drink local. I have had a fair amount of Chambourcin in my time, some of which I've found quite drinkable and even, occasionally, very pleasant. This 2005 Chambourcin from Pennsylvania's top producer is in an altogether different league. It resembles good Pinot Noir in many ways, both in its pale color, lack of excessive fruitiness, delicate yet beautifully balanced structure, and velvety texture. It even has a slight floral fragrance reminiscent of the beautiful bouquet of violets sometimes found in fine Volnay. Finding it in a local wine shop will be your challenge, but when the answer is 'Chaddsford Chambourcin,' the question was: 'What wine is a delectable break from the same-old-same-old?' 90

This syrah from southeastern Pennsylvania's Chaddsford Winery has a charcoal smell with wiffs of alcohol wafting on top. A light-bodied wine, gritty flavors of black pepper, charred wood spice and a hint of tobacco and mint. The wine has a powerful, but short finish. This is a very rustic wine that comes off like a lighter zinfandel. It would go well with barbecue, pepper rub steak, or mesquite chicken.

Chaddsford, Pennsylvania (United States) Pinot Noir Miller Estate Vineyard 2005 ($35): This would be a respectable Pinot Noir from any state in the union (even California, or perhaps especially California, where Pinot these days tends to be sweet and Syrah-ish). Coming from Pennsylvania, it is all the more impressive. Eric Miller has been the clear frontrunner of the Keystone State's modern winemaking era, and as other good producers are beginning to nip at his heels, this wine shows he's still clearly at the head of the pack. It is definitely a light and delicately styled Pinot, but with enough grip and a touch of earthiness to be good with a range of relatively unadorned foods such as roast chicken or pan-fried pork chops. 88

The 2005 Chambourcin has the finesse of a Pinot Noir; the 2005 Pinot Noir has the intensity and complexity of a French Burgundy; the 2004 Merlot is smooth with grainy tannins, totally ripe and clean, and powerful; and the 2005 Rubino, a Tuscan-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Dornfelder and Petit Verdot, could truly pass for Italian in a blind tasting. The cream of the crop, the 2002 Merican, which is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is dense, complex, and still so big and young, it's trying to find itself. It's packed with great stuff, and just needs time to flaunt it. It's what "real" wine is all about.

I just wanted to tell you about a library dinner that I did at the Washington Inn for the Dionysians, a wine group from around the country. We tasted older chardonnays from our cellar, 1991 Barrel Fermented Sanford, 1990 Peter McCoy Les Pierres Vineyard, 1993 Cold Creek Vineyard Chateau St. Michelle, 1990 Premier Cru Montagny from Maurice Bertrand and the 1988 Phillip Roth Chaddsford Winery. My palate is excellent and I have much tasting experience. I had saved this wine from when you came down in 1989 or 90 for a wine dinner with us. The wine was the standout! It was nothing less than phenomenal. The oak was kept subtle and delicate with the fine nuances of French barrels. The acidity was right on and the fruit was blossoming for over an hour after opening. There was really no comparison with the other wines all of which have been cellared impeccably. I have always loved that wine and I wanted to share this moment of pleasure with you. I love French Burgundy and I know that style was a bench mark for you in this wine. What a beautiful masterpiece. Congratulations!
